From the FBI’s stated charter:

“…and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners.”

That’s rather amusing. Overwhelmingly when the FBI telephones a police station, detectives unit, or other law enforcement entity, or if an FBI team shows up at a CS, the cops roll their eyes, make jokes, and exchange unfavorable comments about the incompetent politicians trying to take over the crime scene.

Comments by law enforcement people when the FBI gets involved is overwhelmingly unfavorable and the attitude “kiss this case goodbye” is held by most cops, the usually accurate belief being stated that the criminal case is as good as lost once the FBI gets involved.

I did a public version of one of my reports that looked in to mythology building within the FBI used to justify the entity’s continued budgets and thus its continued existance. The building of mythological threats to the public’s health and safety by the FBI as a means to justify its budgets and violations of human rights, civil rights, and the laws of the nation were examined against specific transcripts of budgetary appeals to Congressional meetings.

In the end, 70% of the FBI could be dismantled without adversely impacting any of the actual law enforcement that the entity does.
